The Volvo Ocean Race is a unique three-yearly around the world sailing race which happens to have its starting point in Alicante. This year’s most anticipated sailing race officially begins on the 4th October, and is an unmissable event, as one can watch the opening ceremony, where the world’s most elite sailors set sail for the race’s first stopover, Cape Town. Here at aBoatTime we’re passionate about sailing, and have some of the best yacht charter choices for watching this year’s Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante.
The event starts on the 2nd October with the opening of the Race Village, located on Alicante Port’s quay 1. This is also home to the headquarters of the Volvo Ocean Race, and the the race’s starting point, from which sailors will sail to the race’s first stopover in Cape Town, on the 11th October.
The week before is filled with entertainment and activities; live music, featuring appearances from Spanish acts Miss Caffeina, Leiva amongst others, watersports, a diving school and activities for children. In addition, the in-port race will be held on the 4th October, just metres from the coast, providing a world-class spectator experience.
Although watching the Volvo Ocean Race from your yacht does have a price, a yacht charter is much more affordable and comfortable than spending a night in a hotel. Seeing the regatta however, is priceless; you’ll be hard pressed to find somewhere else with such buzz and excitement as the Port of Alicante.
The perfect plan
The route is 38,739 nautical miles long and has stopovers in 11 ports; Alicante, Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajaí, Newport, Lisbon, Lorient, The Hague and Gothenburg. In each one of these legs, sailors take part in an in-port race, a one hour-long regatta which takes place near the coast so that spectators can easily watch. Each of these is worth half as many points as the ocean crossing stages.
The city of Alicante is one of the most exciting places on the Costa Blanca, and an excellent starting point not just for the Volvo Ocean Race, but also for your yacht charter holiday.
The 4th of October marks the start of the Volvo Ocean Race’s in-port races. From 9:30am interviews and commentary on the race takes place until the regatta show at 11:30am. The in-port regatta takes place at 2pm, and the prize ceremony at 5pm. After such an exciting day, you can plan your own sailing route, from Playa de San Juan, Alicante’s busiest beach, to Playa de la Almadraba, a quiet, 750 metre long beach where you can watch the most spectacular sunsets, especially atop your yacht.
At night why not explore the exciting city of Alicante, try the local tapas and walk along the seafront promenade. On your yacht charter, you’ll be able to enjoy the buzz of the Volvo Ocean Race on weekday mornings, with interviews, commentary and water sports. We recommend making the most of your holiday and visiting nearby islands on your yacht charter, such as Tabarca, one of the Mediterranean’s most idyllic islands. There you can go diving in picturesque coves with sea turtles, crabs, sea urchins and coral.
Whether you wish to book a skippered or bareboat yacht charter, you don’t need to sail far to discover exciting new places; from Alicante you can easily sail to towns on the Costa Blanca, Valencia and Murcia.
Saturday the 11th October marks the start of the Volvo Ocean Race’s ocean crossing stages. After the in-port regatta, competitors will say goodbye to the Spanish coast, and set sail to their next destination; South Africa’s capital, Cape Town. The regatta show takes place at 11:20am in the Port of Alicante and the sailors’ departure for Cape Town is at 12:30pm.
