Spring is in the air and Seville is getting ready for its annual April fair. Every April the residents of Seville and a large number of tourists from all over the world gather in the Real de la Feria (Seville’s fair grounds) ready to have fun to the rhythm of the Sevillanas.

The origins of this Fiesta date back to 1846 when councilors Jose Maria Ibarra and Narciso Bonaplata had the idea of having an annual three day trading fair dedicated to the sale and purchase of livestock. Once the idea was approved by Queen Isabella II, the first fair took place on April 18th, 1847 attracting 25,000 people. As time went by, the fair transformed from a trading to a social occasion becoming the big fiesta it is today.

What to expect

With live music being played throughout the event, one can enjoy the explosion of color all around, with bright traditional dresses and outfits adorning the surroundings while the riders show off their horses to the interested crowds. All the while there is a delicious smell in the background that creates a tempting pull that makes you want to follow the smells in order to discover its origins. If you do, you’ll discover an assortment of pleasure for your taste buds; fried fish, huge olives, paella, world famous Spanish cured ham as well as some of the best wine all of which will provide you a delicious gourmet experience. The party continues well into the night until the early hours of the morning when people start looking for a cup of hot chocolate and churros, before resting a couple of hours. The party continues until the final Sunday night, when at midnight, the Fair is closed with a spectacular display of fireworks.

Seville’s weather around this time of year is normally pretty warm ranging between 20 and 28ºC (68 and 82ºF), while the chance of rain averages at around once per week, with the rest of the days being mostly sunny with scattered clouds. Therefore it is important to remember the sunscreen.
